I don't usually rate individual episodes but this episode was awful from a storytelling viewpoint. Most of the episode is an exposition dump with characters in a plain white room. The narration (all minutiae of the rules of the game and the characters' strategic approach) is visualized as words and charts on a screen and it's terribly boring and unnecessary because at the end of it all, I still struggle to understand why I as the viewer should care? Yes the purpose of the episode is to move characters to their next settings. But this episode does a horrible job of showing why these particular characters feel like they have to Do Things, other than the fact that they are the Good Guys (after all, ultimately, they're voluntarily signing up to do horrible things to other people). Terrible viewing experience.

This episode and it's low score just proves that JJK fans don't like reading.

Don't understand the problem, MAPPA did a great job animating it and understanding.

Might be the most hated episode of JJK since JJK fans are widely known for doing anything but reading. The episode was great, though. Personally, I felt that the direction of this episode made everything about Kenjaku's plan & the Culling Game itself far more easier to digest compared to the manga.

the Tengen discussion...overly long, overly complicated, needlessly intricate... and frankly i barely understood half of it. even after binging S1/2 and Movie 0 within days of Eps1&2 dropping... so less than 2 weeks ago when i finished that binge. too many on-screen kanji linked to subtitles for those as well as the dialogue subs... i was reading so much i barely caught the fun glimpses of the animation and character designs and acting skills.

so basically... the worst infodump exposition episode i've encountered in my personal anime history of 30+ years.

plus, i didn't get explanations of what i wanted.
1 why is the dead womb whatchamacallit older brother thingybob's older brother too? the MC, orange hair guy. did the brain parasite guy BIRTH the guy him/herself by possessing his MOM!?! flashback to his infancy with granpa bitching about a dead lady to his 'dad' but a moving living talking lady comes into the room?

2 why is Rikka back from 'heaven' and with her 'husband' again? movie 0 showed her... going to the other side? after he released her from the curse he put his elementary school love thing under when she died from that car crashing into her.

3 who that eff is the blond hot chick other than what's his face's mentor in "What kind of girl is your type?" technique? i member her from the flashback arc of S2 and i think she was in movie 0? but thaaat's all i got outta her.

i DID learn that the flashback arc in S2 actually MEANT something effing happened! INSTEAD of 'oh gee nice girl got new hole n her head n ded for no reason... because a new replacement for Tengen's bangin bod swap showed up like POOF!' nahhh that was the preface of the end of the world as we know it and i don't feel fine...

eps1&2 told me nice hammer n nails girl i thought was fun is ded. which I REALLY DON'T LIKE. she was fun, shoulda saved her. maybe stick her in a special room and timeslow her till 1 second takes 60 minutes to happen... while the soul morph curse slowly kills her off... till somebody can figure out how to fix soul morphy curse.

i did learn animation frames old drunkard and the twin girls' daddy is ded. and his sons are all wankers who need to poof from existence. and the twin i like is about 100 plastic surgeries away from looking cute in her glasses again. but at least she isn't ded. and funny thing... Megumin shadow edgelord is HER BOSS NOW!? funnnnyyyy! heh! her kohai is the head of her family now... i chuckled hard over THAT lil bit of sophistry with their daddy's will.

"Does Panda even have a brain?" ohh that made me smirk thinking how PO he would be to hear that... but also laugh a little over it since he's not really human.

oh i also learned Megumin shadow edgelord's older sister woke up from her coma... which i thought was cool... but now she's gotta be a sorcerer in this game thing? that sucks.

ah well, i guess i'll just chalk it up to 'yet another day in JJK World' and wait for ep 4 to pop up next week. :)

Considering how this went in the manga, they actually handled all the exposition pretty well. And also even if it's just an exposition episode to explain how the culling game works (which is very much needed considering all the crazy shit that is gonna happen later), at least the character designs look pretty nice while they are standing around and discussing their plans.

@Pexcel yup i'm 49 and as to my literacy? hmm... did you even look up the definition of illiterate before you used it? we're communicating in English 'here'... i READ the subtitles for the on-screen kanji and the dialogue... the issues weren't my comprehension... BUT THE INCESSANT FLOW OF LETTERS WORDS PUNCTUATION AND POWERPOINT SLIDES... this was about 2 normal anime episodes' worth of subtitles in BOTH forms (on-screen text and dialogue). let me examine the timebar of the episode exactly in the form i watched it... 23m 55s long in total. only 5s short of the standard 24m episode, but very close. exactly 1m 30s of OP, to the second. 1m 29s EP not including the 'next time on JJK' clips... including the clips 1m 44s. 3m 14s of OP/EP/PV (preview). that makes the 'main body' of this episode 20m 41s long.

3m is the standard anime format for TV OP+EP... so... 21 minutes of 'main body' is standard TV anime episode length. LONGER than this episode as i watched it. but just by 19s. therefore pretty close to the benchmark.

therefore, taking double the amount of data you as a human being have to absorb and then shoving it into half that amount of exposure time for the viewer? physiologically. psychologically. you're. gonna. screw. it. up. period. the human eyeballs and brain and mind just cannot handle THAT much info, that rapidly.

so my issue isn't my literacy. it is the amount of effing wordage that came outta this episode into my eyeballs and my brain. along with ALL THE OTHER VISUAL AND AUDIO DATA.

this was like 1 professor giving a lecture. half his screen behind him is his lecture. in script form. text. every word outta his mouth is in. the. script. the OTHER half of the screen behind him is his presentation. actions. words. shapes around the words. lines connecting words. maps. animated maps. animated words. animated lines. animated shapes. videos of people and stills and their names. SOME of his presentation is in Japanese. but he was kind enough to provide on-screen English translations of his Japanese. BUT HE DID NOT TRANSPOSE said text. you got kanji AND English trying to occupy the same space as just the kanji was using beforehand. add into all this? on your desktop before you is your laptop opened to? THE CLASSROOM CHATbox! where the other attendees of that lecture are discussing anything they wish, asking questions of the professor, he answers them IN the CHATbox, oh and you also gotta LISTEN to everything in the room because there are audio cues, the prof included BGM and musical themes! lucky you! there are also sound effects like grunts and laughs and such AND the chattering of the other lecture attendees' mouths... some of the attendees even put their internal monologues INTO the CHATbox!

i was curious about you and looked your profile up here on MAL. it did teach me something today so i thank you very kindly! somebody made a manga of Mein Kampf... i did not know that and frankly... i find the concept that Mein Kampf needed a manga treatment... inconceivable. you on the other hand are insanely brave or incredibly stupid to put Hitler on your Favorites list for characters.

also, if the episode can't give me what i want or need? hmm... nah. i didn't go digging for S1, 2, nor Movie 0... either. so i won't be digging up ALL the stuffs about S3. i'm just not that... big of a fan of this show. i'm not... curious enough about every one of the nitty gritty down n dirty details and so forth. for me, those rabbit holes will remain unexplored. i will look around inside the rabbit holes that make me truly puzzled or genuinely curious. but this show isn't fascinating me enough to follow the white rabbit everywhere he may roam.

I think they did a good job animating these panels. It was colourful and organised. I loved that.
Back when i was reading the manga, Tengens voice was always the voice of an old old man in my head. so hearing this voice and getting used to it is a bit weird and hard for me.
I still have very HIGH expectations from the anime, that new gen calls peak.

People complaining about low episode rating and calling eachother illiterate 😂
first of all i understand the low rating and it was expected….. i remember how much ppl used to cry and complain back when these manga panels were coming out…. If a manga reader complains about long explanations and essays, why are yall being harsh on anime onlys? I remember how the LITERATE people were frustrated during culling game and calling for their favourite characters aka Gojo….
Second of all its only natural that an episode filled with only letters on screen would get a low rating. Plus Nothing major happened, no super interesting super crazy info, no fights or anything special. How can anyone expect anything more than 7 or max 8/10 for an episode like this? Unless youre biased af
But for those of us who read the manga, i assume this was pretty well animated. I personally loved it, but it doesn’t mean i would go and give it a 9/10😂

This would be what the simple-minded people would call the Yap episode. But the director storyboarded it so fucking well, it was really easy to understand. But I won't be surprised if many people get filtered out of it. All the explanations might be too much for the casual JJK audience who aren't too nerdy about all this stuff. LOL. So, it's understandable. I can tell this episode is gonna get a lot of hate. I hope I'm wrong tho. But, I think they did a great job at explaining stuff. I was personally pretty satisfied.

Shoko looked so fucking beautiful in that short part. Yuki and Maki were serving the entire episode. Hakari mentioned as well. And, first look at Takaba, my boy. But, Poor guy. Also, the character animation during the entire Takaba part was chef's kiss. So good. Choso and Yuji's goodbye was sweet as well. :') He was crying... Big Brother Choso.

Never thought I'd enjoy an entire planning sequence episode, but here I am. I think it was a well needed explanation of everything that's going on and what's to come. Although it felt a bit convoluted, it was fun to clearly here what all of their goals are with the culling game, instead of dragging the audience along and only haphazardly giving reasons through all the action.

I have seen and enjoyed many slow TV shows and movies, even if they’re long. I don’t mind reading either, and I don’t need every episode to have non stop action. I do not have a low attention span: some of my favorite shows and movies are character and dialogue focused without any action. All that being said, this episode… is absolute ass. One of the worst episodes of anime I’ve seen, ever. So unbelievably convoluted. The pacing grinds to a halt for 23 straight minutes. The fucking flow charts… seriously? The writing is so lazy. It’s just an exposition dump. If this was episode 1 of JJK I would’ve dropped it and never gotten this far. I would love for the people who think Frieren of all shows is too slow/boring to watch this episode lmao.

I agree the episode had plenty of info dumps, I didn't understand shit either. But for anyone who thinks this is bad, then don't even read Hunter x Hunter, the latest arc is even worse with this type of info dump bullshit.

I don't know what the author of Hunter x Hunter was smoking to add that godawful wall of text and complexity on a fucking shounen manga. I only hope JJK doesn't go that route either.

mannn this is the first time i felt ass watching the sub and not knowing Japanese. can't even read what the characters says because of all the subtitles filling the screen translating the flowcharts. so the full context didn't go to my brain.

besides that, the art in this episode was excellent, looked like a studio photoshoot with that lighting and bakground.

Problem is not "the walls of text" like some people say.
It's the presentation. You can make big chunks of text sound interesting. You can play with visuals, have interesting camera angles. Many shows have even more information dump. Bakuman, Death Note, Monogatari, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei... hell, Gnosia is coming out RIGHT NOW, and it's JUST characters talking to each other. Not to mention Danganronpa. Durarara, too. But here? Characters JUST stand and yap for 20 minutes straight.
Props to animators for PowerPoint tho.

So yeah. Gege's writing is just ass bro. Face it. Without hype and fights it would have been total garbage. In this episode people got a little bit of taste- and immidiately lost their mind.
I love hype and fights tho- again, props to animators, they are drawing it with blood and sweat, and I can see the result.

In any writing/manga school you'd get your ass beaten for expo dumps like this one. Show, don't tell. SHOW, don't tell for 20 minutes straight. It's a visual media. Or fuck off and write a novel. But I'd suggest either 1) cutting it off to the most important stuff, 2) make characters experience it first hand without 100 page long manual and figuring it out on the fly.
